What is Precision Breeding?

In short, Precision Bred Organisms (PBOs):

  • Contain at least one genome feature which results from use of ‘modern biotechnology’ as defined in the Genetically Modified Organisms (Deliberate Release) Regulations 2002

  • Each feature must be stable in its genome integration, meaning it can be propagated at the organism’s reproduction time

  • Each feature must also have been able to be generated using ‘traditional processes’, for example, but not limited to: grafting, induced mutagenesis and in-vitro fertilisation

  • PBO features cannot be acquired from application of ‘artificial modification techniques’, other than modern biotechnology, as defined in the Environmental Protection Act 1990

  • At Crop Genetics Regulatory Consulting we are a niche business, focussing our full attention on understanding the regulatory landscape surrounding precision breeding in England, and specifically serving the plant science industry. If you think your invention might qualify as a PBO, get in touch today to find out how we can help your product enter the market.
